Ecomet Refining won the selection competition among European companies partecipating in the Battery Recycling Technologies Matchmaking Event organized by the European Commission (EU-India Trade and Technology Council, Working Group 2)
Working Group 2 of the EU-India Trade and Technology Council, co-chaired by Mr. Marc Lemaitre, Director General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, and Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, focuses on clean and green energy technologies. The event was attended by H.E. Mr. Herve Delphin, Ambassador of the European Union to India, and H.E. Mr. Saurabh Kumar, Ambassador of India to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Union (EU), as well as other honorary members of the EU and India’s innovation ecosystem.
As part of the winnings, Ecomet Refining, Eneris (Poland), and Tozero (Germany) will undertake an immersion experience in the Indian battery recycling market. Fully funded by the EU, this week-long visit will allow them to connect with key stakeholders, including government officials, visit battery recycling facilities, and explore pilot projects, business collaborations, and co-development initiatives. Additionally, the co-chairs of the event selected two other promising start-ups,  Primobius (Germany) and Lohum (India), to join the winning cohort, allowing them to explore market access opportunities through commercial and technological collaboration, although without financial assistance.
Market Analysis:
The size of the Indian lithium-ion battery market is currently valued at approximately €52.1 million in 2024 (with expected growth to about €1.4 billion by 2030), while the EU market stands at about €18.1 billion in 2022, with projected growth to around €86.8 billion by 2032. While this represents an opportunity for companies to lead sector expansion in both markets, it also requires cross-border innovation and collaboration. Lithium-ion battery recycling will help reduce dependence on international imports, promote the circularity of rare materials, and maintain an independent value chain.
